Blacklisted, Debt Review or Missed Payments: They Are Not the Same Thing
Most people searching for "blacklisted vehicle finance" are in one of three different situations. Each one has a different answer.
| Your situation | What it means | Can Carfin help? |
|---|---|---|
| "Blacklisted" | Your credit record shows a judgment, a default or an account handed over for collection. There is no actual blacklist in South Africa. | Not until a judgment is paid and rescinded, and defaults and handed-over accounts are settled and off your record. |
| Under debt review | A formal legal process under the National Credit Act. A debt counsellor restructures your debt. | No. The law does not allow new credit until you have a clearance certificate. |
| Past missed payments | Payments missed in the past, now up to date, with no judgment, default or debt review on your record. | Possibly, with at least R10,000 take-home a month. The pre-qualification shows where you stand. |
Our Decision Line, Plainly
These are the four things Carfin checks before it takes an application to the banks.
- Credit profile
- We look at your whole credit record: how you pay today, arrears and defaults. The pre-qualification shows where you stand.
- Judgments
- A judgment is a decline until it is paid and rescinded.
- Debt review
- Under debt review, Carfin cannot help. The National Credit Act prohibits new credit.
- Income
- At least R10,000 take-home pay a month, which you can prove.
Meeting all four means Carfin can send your application to the banks. It is not approval: each bank makes its own decision.
Can Carfin Help You?
We would rather tell you the truth now than waste your time. Use this to check where you stand before you apply.
We can likely help if
- Your accounts are up to date, with no judgment or default on your record
- You take home at least R10,000 a month
- You have little credit history, and what is there is clean
- You are self-employed or earn irregular income, but can prove it
- You recently changed jobs and are past, or near the end of, your probation
- A single bank declined you, but your overall profile is borderline
Likely is not certain. Every bank makes its own decision.

We cannot help if
- You are currently under debt review. This is a legal prohibition, not our policy
- You have a judgment against you that has not been paid and rescinded
- You have accounts currently in default or handed over for collection
- You take home less than R10,000 a month, or cannot prove your income
Car Finance If You Are Blacklisted
If there is a judgment, a default or a handed-over account on your record, Carfin cannot take your application further yet.
A judgment is a decline until it is paid and rescinded. Paying the debt alone is not enough: you apply to the court to have the judgment rescinded, and the credit bureau then updates your record. An attorney can help with the rescission.
Defaults and accounts handed over for collection work the same way. Settle them first. Check your record before you apply: under the National Credit Act you are entitled to one free credit report a year from each bureau, and listings that are wrong can be disputed.
Car Finance After Debt Review
While you are under debt review, the law does not allow new credit. Once you are cleared, you can apply again.
When every debt in the review is settled, your debt counsellor issues a clearance certificate and the debt review flag is removed from the credit bureaus. From then on you can apply for vehicle finance through Carfin like anyone else, against the same decision line.
No lender can legally approve vehicle finance while you are still under debt review. Anyone who offers to is operating outside the National Credit Act. The guide to car finance under debt review explains how the clearance certificate works.
- Judgment
- A court order that you owe a debt. It is recorded at the credit bureaus.
- Rescission
- A court cancelling a judgment, usually after the debt is settled. The bureau record is then updated.
- Clearance certificate
- The certificate a debt counsellor issues when every debt in a debt review is settled. It removes the debt review flag.
Realistic Next Steps If You Do Not Qualify Yet
If you are in the "cannot help" list above, these are your legitimate options. Each one is a real way back to being able to apply.
Be careful of same-day promises
Be wary of any company advertising "blacklisted vehicle finance, same-day approval" or "no credit check". Most are not NCR-registered and operate outside the National Credit Act.
Carfin's fee is R7,900 in total: an R5,950 admin fee (VAT included) plus R1,950 registration, paid at cost to the licensing department. Licensing is separate. You see every cost before you sign. Read how Carfin's fee works.
Completing debt review
If you are under debt review, keep going. Once every included debt is settled and your debt counsellor issues a clearance certificate, the flag is removed from the credit bureaus. You can then apply for credit again, including vehicle finance through Carfin.
Rescinding a judgment
If a judgment was granted against you and you have since settled the debt, you can apply to the court to have it rescinded. Once it is rescinded and the credit bureau is updated, lenders can consider your application. An attorney can help with the rescission.
Free credit report
Under the National Credit Act you are entitled to one free credit report a year from each bureau. Check each bureau, such as TransUnion and Experian. Knowing exactly what is on your record is the first step to improving it. Some listings contain errors that can be disputed and removed.
NCR debt counsellor
If you are struggling with debt but are not yet in formal debt review, a debt counsellor registered with the National Credit Regulator can look at your situation and advise on realistic options. The NCR's register is at ncr.org.za.

The Applicants Banks Typically Get Wrong
Banks use automated scoring models, and those models are not good with nuance. Apply at one bank and you get one model and one decision.
Carfin sends your application to the top banks at the same time. Each bank sees the same application and decides on its own. For a borderline profile, that makes a real difference.
- Self-employed and contract workers with provable income
- People with little credit history, where what is there is clean
- Applicants with a strong recent payment history
- People who recently changed jobs and are past, or near the end of, probation
- Pensioners and commission earners with stable long-term income
Frequently Asked Questions
Not while there is an unpaid judgment, a default or an account handed over for collection on your record. Carfin cannot take your application further until a judgment is paid and rescinded and the bureau record is updated. "Blacklisted" usually means one of those listings. If your record has no judgment, default or handed-over account, that is a different situation, and Carfin may be able to help.
Once your debt review is completed and the record is cleared. When every debt in the review is settled, your debt counsellor issues a clearance certificate and the debt review flag is removed from the credit bureaus. From then on you can apply for credit again, including vehicle finance through Carfin.
No. Scores differ by bureau, and each bank uses its own model. Carfin looks at your whole credit profile: how you pay your accounts today and any arrears, defaults or judgments. You also need at least R10,000 take-home pay a month, no judgment that has not been paid and rescinded, and you must not be under debt review. The bank then decides on your whole profile.
No legitimate car finance comes without a credit check. The National Credit Act requires a credit provider to assess whether you can afford the loan before it lends. Be wary of any company advertising "no credit check" or "blacklisted vehicle finance, same-day approval". Most are not NCR-registered and operate outside the National Credit Act.
"Blacklisted" is an informal word. Most South Africans use it to mean their credit record shows serious negative listings: judgments, defaults, or accounts handed over for collection. There is no actual blacklist in South Africa. Credit bureaus such as TransUnion and Experian record how you have handled credit, and lenders use that record to judge risk. A judgment can stay on your record for up to five years unless it is rescinded. If you have a judgment that has not been paid and rescinded, Carfin cannot take your application further, whatever your income.
No. Debt review (debt counselling) is a formal legal process under the National Credit Act. A registered debt counsellor restructures all your debt into one lower repayment. While you are under debt review, the NCA prohibits any credit provider, vehicle finance lenders included, from giving you new credit. This is not a bank policy. It is the law, so Carfin cannot help while you are under debt review. Once your clearance certificate is issued and your credit record is updated, you can apply for credit again.
Possibly. A record without a judgment, a default or debt review is a different situation. If your credit profile is one Carfin can take to the banks and you take home at least R10,000 a month, Carfin can help, and the pre-qualification shows where you stand. Banks look at more than your score: your income, how stable your job is, the debt you already carry, the value of the car and your credit profile as a whole. Carfin sends your application to the top banks at the same time, so a profile one bank declines may be approved by another, at a different rate. Nothing is guaranteed: every bank makes its own decision.
Banks do not publish one minimum score for vehicle finance. Each bank has its own internal risk model. It weighs your score alongside your income, your debt compared to your income, your employment, and the value of the car compared to the loan. Carfin does not work to one number either: it looks at your whole credit profile. Income, stable employment and a clean record carry real weight, and sending your application to several banks helps find the one whose model fits your profile.
It can, but it does not rule you out. Banks like to see stable income, so time in your current job counts. Carfin can tell you which banks are more flexible about time in a job, and present your income history honestly and clearly, including your previous employment.
Yes, if your income can be proved and what is on your record is clean. A thin file means limited credit history. Self-employed applicants with a thin file are harder for a single bank to assess, because their income is less predictable and their credit footprint is smaller. Carfin builds these applications carefully, using bank statements, an accountant's letter and management accounts to show your income, and sends them to the top banks at the same time.
If you are under debt review, complete the process and get your clearance certificate. Once you are cleared, you can apply for vehicle finance normally. If you have a judgment, settle the debt and apply to have the judgment rescinded. An attorney can help with this. If you need help getting your credit back on track, contact a debt counsellor registered with the National Credit Regulator (its register is at ncr.org.za), or get your free credit report from a bureau. Avoid any company advertising "blacklisted vehicle finance same-day approval". These are usually not NCR-registered and operate outside the NCA.
