One Application, Submitted to Top Banks Simultaneously

A car loan, which banks call vehicle finance, is priced by each bank on its own. Walk into one bank and you get one assessment, at that bank's rate.

Carfin sends your application to the top South African banks at the same time, then negotiates the offers for you. You see the rate, the term and the total cost of each, and you choose. Carfin is rated 5.0from 16 Google reviews.

  • One application, assessed by several banks side by side
  • A dedicated consultant handles your documents, submission and payout
  • New cars, used cars and private purchases are all accepted
  • With or without a balloon (residual), fixed and linked rate options
How it works

How Car Finance Works With Carfin

Most of the work happens on our side. Meet the team who negotiates for you.

1Check

Pre-qualify

A few questions on your phone and a soft credit check. It takes about 2 minutes, needs no documents and does not affect your credit score.

2Apply

Send the full application

Tell us about the car, the price, and the deposit and term you would like. Your consultant asks for the supporting documents and sends one application to the top banks, with one credit enquiry.

3Review

Compare and accept

Each bank assesses you on its own. Your consultant negotiates the offers and explains the rate, term and total cost. You decide. There is no obligation until you sign.

4Drive

Sign and drive

You sign the finance agreement, the dealer or seller is paid, and your consultant confirms registration and handover.

Car Finance Requirements: Who Qualifies

These are Carfin's own lines, so you know where you stand before you apply. You can also check the basic criteria in four questions.

Requirements at a glance

Identity
Valid South African ID
Minimum take-home pay
R10,000 a month
Under debt review
Cannot apply
Judgment against you
Must be paid and rescinded

What helps your application

  • A South African citizen or permanent resident with a valid ID
  • At least R10,000 take-home pay a month that you can prove: salary, self-employment or a pension
  • A clean recent payment record, with no accounts in default
  • Debt repayments the bank sees as affordable next to your income and expenses
  • A stable, regular income you can prove
  • A deposit, which lowers the amount you borrow against the car's value and can make approval more likely

What makes it harder

  • Income you cannot prove, or bank statements with irregular deposits
  • Still being on probation at a new employer (some banks will wait)
  • Accounts that are behind right now, or handed over for collection

Where Carfin cannot help

Carfin cannot help while you are under debt review (the National Credit Act does not allow new credit), while a judgment against you has not been paid and rescinded, or if your take-home pay is under R10,000 a month.

Before you shop

Pre-Qualify Before You Shop (Vehicle Finance Pre-Approval)

The pre-qualification tells you where you stand before you choose a car: whether Carfin can take your application to the banks. It is not an approval. The banks decide on the full application.

The pre-qualification

  • About 2 minutes on your phone
  • A soft credit check: no effect on your credit score
  • No documents. Just your ID number and a rough idea of your income and expenses
  • Tells you whether Carfin can take you to the banks, not your rate

The full application

  • For when you have found the car and have your documents
  • Goes to the top banks at the same time, with one credit enquiry
  • This is where the banks decide and make their offers
  • No obligation to accept any offer

Finance structures

Choose the Structure That Fits Your Situation

Your consultant explains each option and recommends the one that suits your cash flow and how you want to own the car.

No balloon

Your instalments pay off the full amount plus interest, usually over 12 to 84 months. There is no lump sum at the end, and the car is fully yours when the term is done.

Balloon / residual

Part of the price moves to the end of the term, so your instalments are lower along the way. Depending on the bank, it can go up to 50%. You pay interest on it for the whole term.

Balloon payments explained

Fixed vs linked rate

A fixed rate keeps your instalment the same for the whole term. A linked rate follows prime, so it drops when prime falls and rises when it goes up.

What Interest Rate Will I Get on Car Finance?

Nobody can tell you your rate before a bank has assessed you. A rate quoted before that is a guess.

Most car finance in South Africa is linked to the prime lending rate. Each bank adds its own margin above or below prime for you, based on how it reads your risk. The South African Reserve Bank publishes the repo rate that prime follows.

What moves the rate a bank offers you:

FactorWhy it matters to the bank
Your credit recordHow you have paid credit before shows the bank how likely you are to pay this loan
Your depositA deposit means the bank lends less than the car is worth, so its risk is lower
Income and existing debtThe bank must check the instalment is affordable under the National Credit Act
The carAge, mileage and value change how much the bank will lend against it
Term and balloonA longer term or a large balloon leaves more owing for longer
Fixed or linkedA fixed rate is usually set a little higher, because the bank carries the rate risk

Because Carfin sends one application to several banks at once, you see more than one rate, and your consultant negotiates them. The bank's initiation fee and a monthly service fee set by the bank are added to your agreement; your consultant shows you the full cost of each offer before you sign.

Carfin's fee is R7,900 in total: an R5,950 admin fee (VAT included) plus R1,950 registration, paid at cost to the licensing department. Licensing is separate. You see every cost before you sign.

Know your numbers

How Much Car Can I Afford?

Examples with a 10% deposit over 72 months at an example rate of 11.75%. Lender fees are not included, and your real rate comes from the bank.

Car priceMonthly instalmentFinanced after 10% depositTotal repaid over 72 months
R200,000R3,496R180,000R251,689
R300,000R5,244R270,000R377,533
R400,000R6,991R360,000R503,378

There is no fixed rule for how much car you can afford. The bank looks at what is left of your take-home pay after your living costs and the debt you already pay. Carfin's minimum is R10,000 take-home a month.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Finance

To apply through Carfin you need a valid South African ID, an income you can prove of at least R10,000 take-home pay a month, and a credit profile Carfin can take to the banks. You cannot be under debt review, and any judgment against you must be paid and rescinded. The bank then checks that the instalment is affordable on your income and expenses.

Not through Carfin. Carfin's minimum is R10,000 take-home pay a month, because below that the banks Carfin works with rarely find a car instalment affordable once your living costs are counted. If your income is under R10,000, Carfin will tell you so up front rather than send an application that will be declined.

There is no single number. Carfin looks at your whole credit profile: how you pay your accounts today, any arrears, defaults or judgments, and whether you are under debt review. Each bank then uses its own scoring model and also weighs your income, existing debt, job history and the car, so one bank may approve a profile that another declines. The pre-qualification shows where you stand.

No. Carfin's pre-qualification is a soft check, so it has no effect on your credit score. It tells you whether Carfin can take your application to the banks. It is not an approval: the banks decide on the full application, which goes to them with one credit enquiry.

Your South African ID, your driver's licence, your latest 3 months' payslips (or 6 months' bank statements if you are self-employed, or a pension letter if you are retired), your latest 3 months' bank statements and proof of address not older than 3 months. You need no documents for the pre-qualification. Your consultant confirms exactly what to send once you have applied.

No. While you are under debt review the National Credit Act does not allow any lender to give you new credit, including car finance. Once your debt counsellor issues a clearance certificate, you can apply again.

Carfin's fee is R7,900 in total: an R5,950 admin fee (VAT included) plus R1,950 registration, paid at cost to the licensing department. Licensing is separate. You see every cost before you sign.

A broker like Carfin sends your one application to several banks at the same time, instead of you applying at one bank after another. Each bank assesses you on its own and comes back with an offer. Carfin's consultant negotiates those offers, explains each one, and handles the paperwork all the way to payout. You choose the offer, or none.

Yes. Carfin arranges finance for new and used vehicles. Banks look at a used car's age, mileage and condition. Each bank sets its own limits on age and mileage. An older or high-mileage car may get a higher rate, or the bank may lend a smaller share of its value. Your consultant tells you what the bank needs for the car you want.

Yes. Private sale finance is one of Carfin's specialities. Carfin checks the car's title, settles any finance still owing with the seller's bank, pays the seller by EFT and makes sure ownership transfers cleanly. No cash changes hands between buyer and seller. The private sale finance page explains each step.

A fixed rate is set when you sign and does not change for the whole term, so your instalment stays the same. A linked rate moves with the South African prime lending rate: if prime goes up your instalment goes up, and if it falls you pay less. Fixed rates are usually set a little higher on the day you sign, because the bank carries the risk of rates moving. Carfin shows you the monthly difference on your own deal before you choose.

A balloon (or residual) is a lump sum left to the end of your finance term. It lowers every instalment, but you pay interest on it for the whole term and still owe it at the end. For example, on R315,000 financed at an example rate of 11.75% over 72 months, the instalment is R6,117 without a balloon and R5,208 with a 30% balloon of R94,500. When the term ends you settle the balloon in cash, refinance it, or sell or trade in the car. Use one only if you have a plan for that lump sum.

Your own bank gives you one assessment at its own rate. Carfin sends one application to the top banks at the same time, so you see more than one answer, and a consultant negotiates the offers for you. Carfin also does the admin: collecting documents, submitting, and arranging payout to the dealer or seller.
