Can You Get Car Finance With No Credit History?

Possibly, but it is harder than with a good record. A bank uses your credit record to see how you handle debt. If you have never had an account, it has nothing to go on, so it looks harder at everything else: your income, your job and how much you are asking for.

No history is not the same as bad history. A thin record with no missed payments is a much easier starting point than arrears or a judgment. If your record has problems, read car finance with bad credit instead.

What Banks Look For in a First-Time Buyer

  • Steady income you can prove with payslips and bank statements
  • A job that looks secure: banks usually prefer permanent work, and some want you past probation
  • A sensible amount: a modest first car is far easier to approve than a big one
  • A deposit, which lowers what the bank risks
  • Room in your budget once your living expenses and any other debt are taken off

The National Credit Act requires the bank to check that you can afford the instalment, so your income and expenses decide your limit. See what car you can afford on your salary.

Documents You Need

  • Your South African ID
  • A valid driver's licence
  • Your latest 3 months of payslips
  • Your latest 3 months of bank statements
  • Proof of address not older than 3 months

You need no documents for the pre-qualification. Your consultant confirms exactly what to send once you apply.

What a First Car Costs a Month

As an example, a R220,000 car over 72 months at 11.75%, with no balloon:

DepositAmount financedInstalmentTotal paid, deposit included
NoneR220,000R4,272 a monthR307,620
10% (R22,000)R198,000R3,845 a monthR298,858
20% (R44,000)R176,000R3,418 a monthR290,096

The example rate is prime (10.75%) plus one point, for illustration. A first-time buyer may be offered a higher rate. Bank fees, insurance and licensing are not included. These are examples, not quotes. Try your own numbers in the car finance calculator.

Then add comprehensive insurance, which can be high for a young or new driver, plus fuel and services. Get an insurance quote on the exact car before you sign.

How to Improve Your Chances

  • Save a deposit. Even 10% makes a real difference to the bank and to your instalment.
  • Start a small credit record now. A cellphone contract or a store account paid in full every month builds history.
  • Do not apply everywhere. Each application leaves an enquiry on your record. Carfin sends one application to the top banks with one enquiry.
  • Choose a modest first car. A smaller amount is easier to approve and cheaper to insure.
  • Keep your bank statements clean. Regular salary in, no bounced debit orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Possibly, but it is harder. With little or no credit history, a bank has less to judge you on, so steady income you can prove matters more, and a deposit helps. The pre-qualification shows whether your record is enough for Carfin to take an application to the banks.

A South African ID, a valid driver's licence, your latest 3 months of payslips and bank statements, and proof of address not older than 3 months. Carfin needs you to take home at least R10,000 a month. You also need comprehensive insurance on the car for as long as the finance runs.

Not always, but it helps a lot when your credit history is thin. A deposit lowers the amount the bank has to approve and the instalment. On a R220,000 car over 72 months at 11.75%, a 10% deposit brings the instalment from about R4,272 to R3,845 a month, and the total paid from R307,620 to R298,858.

Use a small amount of credit and pay it on time, every month, for at least several months. A cellphone contract or a store account you pay in full each month both count. Do not open several accounts at once: each application is recorded, and too many in a short time can count against you.

Car finance is usually in one person's name, on that person's own income, so a bank will mainly judge you. Ask your consultant what is possible in your case. A parent can also help with a deposit, which lowers the amount you need approved.

A good used car usually costs much less than the same model new, so the instalment and insurance are lower. Banks set an age limit on used cars, which each bank decides. Carfin arranges finance on cars from dealers and from private sellers.
